Blog Assignment #5

The Benefits of Podcasts in the Classroom
This podcast talks about how podcasts can help students with class work and learning. I really like that it can make it possible for a student who is sick to still get what happened in class that day. Also it's good that it allows the students to be creative, and allows parents to see what their children are doing in class.

The Practical Principals
This podcast is an audio type podcast where the two people discuss their life as principals. I think that the casual manner of speaking is good for a podcast because it is easy to listen to and understand. I learned from this podcast that it is better to have some sort of visual whether it be a still picture or slide show.

100 Ways to Use Your iPod
This article was very informative and useful for anyone with access to an iPod( which is almost everyone). I am one of those people who still considers an iPod to be "music only" so I had no idea it was capable of so many helpful things! I think that I will definitely be using some of these applications for school related purposes.

Blog Assignment #4

Scott McLeod:
He is an associate professor at Iowa State University, and the director of CASTLE which is a center dedicated to the technology needs of school administrators. He has a passion for combining technology and learning.
I enjoyed his post about the fears that some people have about using the internet and technology in general for learning purposes. I agree with the point he is trying to make about how important being technologically aware will be to the students future. Sure there are bad aspects of the internet but if we start educating the students on the good and evil at an early age then maybe they will make the right decision.

iSchool Initiative:
This idea makes sense and seems like a plausible solution for the economic situation of school systems. How great would it be to have one small device that had the capabilities of anything you ever need for school? It would be like high school in your pocket! Its hard to believe that the iTouch already has almost  all the apps that you would need to have an iSchool.
Of course this would be a drastic change in our school systems as well as learning as we know it. There would definitely be people who would refuse or be very hesitant to such a big change. It would take a good amount of time to transition to this greener and technologically savvy way of having school. But if people would cooperate then it may be a very big step towards the future of education.

Lost Generation:
In this short video a monologue is read that is arguing that we are in control of how our generation views and lives life. I absolutely loved this video and how creative and inspiring it was. I hope that many young people view this video and realize that it is up to us to make sure that the first reading does not become a reality.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir- 'Lux Aurumque:
This performance was very unique and impressive. It is amazing how he was able to put together the music and everyones individual voices to make a beautiful song. It just shows that there is no limit to the possibilities that internet can bring to our lives.

Additional Assignment #1

A. The educational implications that search engines such as google squared provide are easier and more access to information that may be needed for projects, papers, etc. Also these search engines allow you to compare statistics and facts in the form of a table so you can see the differences in the information.

B. The educational implications of search engines such as Wolfram Alpha are that it gives you plenty of information and statistics, it is easy to understand, and has data for almost anything you need to know.

C. I did not know of google squared before this assignment.

D. I did not know of Wofram Alpha before this assignment.

E. The part of Did You Know that your comments changed my opinion on is the part of America's comparison to other countries in the aspect of size as well as of honor students. I wasn't considering the vast difference in population and size.

F. I learned from this exercise to always be sure and compare statistics before you make an assumption about information. The information may seem shocking but if you don't have something to compare it to then you can't know that for sure.

C4T #1 Summary

1 C4T#1

This post was about whether or not the idea of PLE/VLE is something that should be brought into our school systems. The author of this post considers that since students have to have these when they are in higher education, wouldn't it make sense to begin their virtual learning knowledge when they are much younger? He also added that there would be some issues that would have to be worked out such as getting having limitations on what the kids could access from school.
I agreed with him that it makes sense to start this learning environment at an early age because the students will already have a base to build on later in life as the continue learning.

1 C4T#2

This post was about the internet being nominated for the nobel peace prize. The author's argument was that the people who thought this was absurd were wrong because it wasn't the internet itself being nominated, but rather all the people who have ever had anything to do with it. He made the point that we take for granted how much the internet has done for our society from communication to learning.
In my comment I told him how this post opened my eyes and made me appreciate the internet as a serious attribute to our life. I agreed with his point that there are so many people that take part in making the internet what it is and that the nomination was for them as well.

Wordle: about me

Response To Films

Did You Know? By Karl Fisch
This video was very shocking to me. The statistics on how long Americans have been at their current jobs was a surprise because it seems like most people used to find jobs and stay at them until they retire. But that has apparently changed with the growth of our society's job options. Also the statistics on how America's population compares to other countries in the world was new information to me. I feel that we sometimes think that America is on top in the world just because of stereotypes, but I think we should all be aware of what is happening in the world around us.
The information in this video about technology really opened my eyes. It seems that our society is based on technology and uses it for everything. The question in the video, "To whom were these questions addressed before Google?", catches my attention. We depend so greatly on technology that it doesn't seem possible to function normally in this society and be technologically illiterate. Another fact that shocked me was that in 2013 there will be a super computer that exceeds the computational capabilities of the human brain. This means that in the very near future there could possibly be something that could fulfill many of the jobs that humans depend on for a living. Overall this video made me see how important it is for me to become more technologically inclined.

Mr. Winkle Wakes By: Mathew Needleman
This video was an entertaining way of saying that every other area of society has advanced and progressed technologically except our school systems. This fact is becoming more of a problem everyday. Since technology is a large part of higher education as well as most careers today, how much sense does it make not to incorporate technology into learning at an earlier age? If we make our public classrooms more techno-friendly, then this could increase the students' success in the future.
Bringing the school system up to date would not be an easy task. Probably the biggest problem we would run into is the money that it would take and where it would come from. Also there would have to be a transition for the students who are older and haven't been exposed to this type of learning. Finally, all the teachers who are not up to par in technological education would have to learn things before they could successfully teach students.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
I really enjoyed this video. I agree with Ken totally that children are being taught to be afraid of being wrong, which is resulting in their loss of creativity. The idea that education in the school systems only focuses on educating children from the neck up is true. It takes more than just knowledge in math and science to become a well rounded person.
I think we should be incorporating creativity in the education process of children. While I don't think they should be forced to be artists or dancers, I do think they should have the option to explore their creative side while learning the core subjects as well. This also relates to the idea of bringing technology in to the classroom. We have to be careful not to let technology replace what little bit of creativity that already exists in our school systems.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
This video shows a teacher of a class for improving students' knowledge of technology. This class is a very good start for incorporating technology in the school systems. The students will benefit greatly from learning all these things. They are also interacting with students around the world which will make them more aware of the rest of the world.
The class she is teaching seems a lot like our edm 310 class because they are making blogs and learning to use computers to learn rather than pencils and paper. I think that if there were classes like this available in my high school it would have been very helpful for me in my higher education. I think classes like this should exist and multiply all over our country.
